Naz Meets Nursery School Head Teachers and Governors to Discuss Challenges to Their Funding
Fantastic morning with fellow Bradvocates at Edmund Street Nursery School yesterday where I met Head Teachers and Governors from Bradford's outstanding nursery schools and discussed the funding crisis they currently face.
Nursery schools are the one aspect of the education system where the gap in attainment between the poorest children and the rest is significantly narrowed. The reason for this is that nursery schools are staffed by qualified teachers and led by qualified head teachers. In other words, they represent the very best provision in terms of teaching quality and the outcomes achieved far surpass those of private nurseries and school based nursery classes.
The governments funding proposals, whilst including some short term protections, will have a devastating effect on such quality provision. The funding formula will make it impossible to pay for kind of qualified staffing teams that have consistently delivered such outstanding results in Bradford. Not only are these schools staffed by teaching professionals they provide a hub of support for Bradford's Children's Centres and the core of Bradford early years training specialists.
It is time to stand up for Nursery Schools and demand quality nursery education for all children.
